Le Pourquoi-Pas (1907)

The Why-Pas?; ie, Why Not? was a French scientific vessel that was used for the second French South Polar Expedition led by Jean Charcot during the years 1908-1910. It was equipped with an engine and electricity, supporting scientific laboratories and libraries for the successful expedition.

In 1912 the ship became the first school ship of the French Navy. From 1918-1925 the ship was used for many scientific voyages under the command of Charcot. Command was changed to others at this time, but Charcot remained Head of Exploration aboard the ship until 16 September 1936 when the ship sunk in a violent storm. Charcot perished along with 39 others, leaving just one survivor.

The basis for this model is the 1:80 scale Constructo kit from Spain. The hull is painted cream above the water line, but essentially all of the remainder of the model is left with a natural finish to highlight the different wood species used. The completed model is nearly 19″ high, has a length of 29 1/2″, and is just over 8″ wide. It is now displayed in a custom build case made from cherry wood.

This model has a permanent home in a university dean’s suite, but one can be made especially for you!
