HMY Britannia (1893)

His Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was a racing yacht built in 1893 for RYS Commodore Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Her racing career was quite successful with 33 wins in 43 starts. In 1936 Britannia’s hull was purposely sunk,  following the wish of King George V to have the ship follow him to his grave.

In 1993 a project was begun to build a full-sized replica of the Britannia; the work eventually becoming the responsibility of the K1 Britannia Trust. Work ceased on this wood hulled replica when, in 2018, the K1 Britannia Trust decided to begin a new sustainably-based replica with an aluminum hull.

My 1:64 scale model is built from an Italian Mamoli kit and features beautifully crafted deck planking. The hull planking, laid diagonally, extenuates the graceful shape of Britannia. The completed model, with natural wood finish, is 30″ long and stands an impressive 36 1/2″ high.

Many hours have been dedicated to this representation of HMY Britannia. The finishing touches will be determined by the client – simply rigged or presented with a full set of sails.  This handcrafted model can be yours for $2,500 rigged or $3,000 rigged with sails.
