Xebecs were once a common site on the Mediterranean Sea. They were fast sailing and could operate in relatively swallow waters. The masting differs greatly from the typical ‘square rigged’ ship that is often modeled. Here we have a ship supporting a ‘lanteen rig’ where the masts are relatively short, but support a long bowed yard on which a triangular sail would be mounted.
My 1:60 scale model, built from an Italian Amati kit is a wonderful representation of a xebec from the mid 18th century. The majority of the model has been given a natural finish with red and blue paints accenting the presentation. The completed model is 28″ long and approximately 21″ high. Due to the lanteen rig the model is just over 5″ wide, making the model easier to display.
An excess of 250 hours were spent on this handcrafted xebec model. This very interesting model can be yours for $2,500.
